To those seeking to improve their cycling and overall fitness: On a trip to Bikefitters to pick up my new bike, I picked up a brochure about the Kona Multisport Training base training program. The thought of working with a trainer to improve my cycling was intriguing but reading about base training for racing and triathelons was intimidating. I am new to cycling and feared I would not be able to keep up with such a course. I signed up anyway and found a group of enthusiastic cyclists with various levels of experience ranging in age from 16 to me at 57. Our workouts were great but strenuous. John Josephs’ training methods extracted our best efforts. I was able to work out harder and longer than I would have ever done on my own. The results were immediately noticeable on my weekend rides and during other activities. My speed increased dramatically and I was able to extend the duration of my rides. The workouts on the trainer were great but I think the strength training I did at Fitness by Frantz’s fitness studio was even more beneficial to me. We worked on our core and functional strength which helped me improve my posture and comfort on my long rides. In addition, it also helped me improve my everyday posture and I gained back some of the lost agility that I have been blaming on old age (that is important when AARP starts sending news letters and Extended Care policy proposals start arriving in the mail). I think that the fee for the Kona Multisport Training class was a small investment that will pay off big in the improvement of the quality of my life in the future as well as adding to the enjoyment of my cycling.
