Death Valley Century and Double Century 2009

Wow, what a day! The much anticipated Death Valley Double Century at Furnace Creek, California.  This was my primary cycling goal for 2009 and my first attempt at this uber ultra-distance. Two hundred miles on the bike is a long day.  My main concern was my butt.  My longest ride this year was 140 miles, the MS 150 to Ormand Beach and back.  The Death Valley event is sponsored by AdventureCorps , an … read more »

Death Valley Spring Edition 2011

" Embrace the wind and flow with it...Mother Nature is a worthy adversary but persist and persevere and she relents in time."   George Vargas, 1st finisher, DV Double Century, 2011     "The first 60 miles took me 7 hours!" An experienced cyclist  might read my first statement and think, "what's up with that?"  They might speculate that I'm a novice, out-of-shape cyclist and rode a behemoth, fat-tire, steel-framed mountain bike.  Without any … read more »

Kelley Kunz is an IRONMAN: Ironman Wisconsin, September 13, 2009

For Kelley Kunz, a 41-year-old Jacksonville physical therapist, completing an Ironman triathlon has been a "lifelong goal."  That's why she spent about a year training for the Ironman Wisconsin, which consists of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride and a marathon-length (26.2 miles) run. But there's something slightly self-absorbed about spending hours each week training for the event, especially when you've got children who are 6 and 4, and a husband who runs … read more »

New Year’s Resolutions 2010

New Year's Resolutions 2010 Every year I make resolutions to improve myself and make life easier for people around me.  At some point, usually in January, I resume my former lifestyle and the well-intended new resolutions are abandoned. I will try something new this year.  Using reverse psychology on myself, these are my New Year's resolutions for 2010.  Hopefully in the next couple of weeks, I will break them and be right on track for … read more »

Return To Normalcy - 2011 Tour de France by John Josephs

In my opinion, the 2011 edition of the Tour de France was the most exciting in years.  The 86 hours, 22 minutes and 22 seconds it took Cadel Evans to win the race  is roughly the amount of time I spent on the couch watching the race.  This year’s race made me think of past TdF races and all the speculation and negative publicity regarding doping and the sport of cycling. However, the 2011 version … read more »

The Triple Bypass Ride:  July 9, 2011 On July 9th, 2011, client Ernest Hale and I completed the 120 mile, Triple Bypass from Evergreen-to-Avon, Colorado.  I usually chronicle my adventures and go on and on about the ride and the challenges encountered along the way, etc., etc.  But what really made an impression on me about this ride was Ernest’s commitment.  I remind you again, the ride was very tough.  It was a long day in … read more »
